1-Designjunction photos from the show sept 201310

The standard format of a design trade show has been re-shaped and about time too, thanks to designjunction.  I pondered over what makes this show so different – what is that essential mix the designjunction team are getting so right?  Is it the contrast of the wonderfully curated collection of brands & designers set against the industrial backdrop of the old sorting office? The slick and shiny design products juxtaposed with raw and edgy; the old with the new?  This show certainly does have its own ‘vibe’ and its a very good one at that.  When we visited on preview night, you could feel the creative energy and buzz in the air as designers and brands were unveiling new products for the first time.  You could say designjunction is a festival within a festival (the London Design Festival that is, of course!), as it has everything going on under one roof; the designers and products, the music, the eateries, demonstrations in the ‘flash factories’, seminars and even shopping. If you didn’t make it to this year’s designjunction, put this one firmly on the calender for 2014.  In the meantime here is THE EDIT, a wrap-up of some of our favourite finds…

6 lane twintone lampshade designjunction london design festival 2013

Lane create hand-pulled screen prints (see the Swimming Blue print in earlier blog post) and stationery (including some for Margaret Howell).  New to their design work is the Twintone lampshade made entirely from paper with no plastic or metal bits making it recyclable and biodegradable.  I am loving the mint with burgundy detailing as shown above – find it here.  Paper is one of the key trends for lighting, read about all the trends for lighting here.

10 workhouse designjunction london design festival 2013

The Tile Collection from WorkHouse has attracted lots of attention recently and is nominated for the Elle Decoration British Design Awards 2013.  With over 200 patterns to choose from, the online design simulator means you can plan-out your pattern combination with ease.  On checking out the WorkHouse website, I discovered they also have an awesome partitioning system (as shown above) that can be made to your spec. Definitely want to use this on a future design project.
