Pantone Colour of the year 2015: Marsala

Each year Pantone likes to tune our eyes into certain colours. And for 2015 it wants us to think about Marsala 18-1438, a wine-red with earthy brown undertones. Well how do they know this hue is ‘the one’?

The new ‘colour of the year’ isn’t just picked on a whim but selected by a group of global colour/trend experts who forecast future colour palettes that could influence the creative industries including fashion, beauty, graphic and interior design. Many of Pantone’s influences stem from understanding the current mood and attitude of consumers combined with looking at emerging technology, art and film through to changing lifestyles and economic conditions.

Experts at Pantone believe the rich hue of Marsala exudes confidence and stability with the need to feel more robust and grounded. Marsala on its own could be a little too brown but layering this hue with complimentary colours from the opposite side of the colour wheel such as teals and blue-greens makes for some interesting combinations. Adding bronze tones, nude pinks, umber and copper also works well.

Working with Pantone’s suggested colour pairings, here are some mood boards to get you thinking Marsala.   Is this the hue for you?
