Boutique Hotel with Laid Back Luxury: Alex Hotel, Perth
The independent boutique ‘Alex’ hotel in Perth, Australia is everything you would want in a hotel – it strikes the perfect balance of artsy location, hip design, chilled out atmosphere.
Located smack bang in the heart of Perth’s Cultural District, close to Perth’s central business district and next to the diverse neighbourhood of Northbridge which is buzzing with independent retailers, cafes, small bars and pocket sized restaurants, it is an ideal base if you wish to explore Perth, do business in the CBD and/or take in the arts. And exploring is made easy with the complimentary vintage-style Lekker Bikes that are at the ready for guests to use in addition to maps, locks and helmets.
Designed by Space Agency architects and interior design firm Arent & Pyke, we are particularly drawn to the hotel interior which features a healthy dose of colour, industrial elements such as high concrete ceilings with exposed beams, pipes and track lighting; a mix of modern European and Australian furnishings, and a hint of boho (crocheted wall hangings, patchwork rugs). This hotel packs stylish elements with a laid back and welcoming atmosphere.
Hotel General Manager Miles Hull says, “Rooms are for sleeping and Spaces are for Living. While our bedrooms are little creative bases to dream, sleep and think, we believe a hotel should be like a home, with shared communal space for living”.
Whilst the 74 bedrooms have some lovely features in their own paired back style, it is evident that the main emphasis has been put into the shared communal areas which draw you in and invite you to stretch out, relax, discover, connect and converse with each other. There are plenty to choose from including the lobby espresso bar with its soft lounge banquette seating and large communal dining table; the mezzanine level intimate lounging nooks and library of diverse art and design books; the large buffet table where breakfast is served and adjoining outdoor patio; and the rooftop terrace with magnificent views over the city.
Lets take a visual tour inside to show you why, this hotel gets our thumbs up as well as receiving the glamorous Mr & Mrs Smith boutique hotel, stamp of approval.
What immediately strikes us about this hotel is the clever use of colour, starting with the green cubist style tiled wall on the exterior. Un unconventional, yet successful colour palette of deep greys, greens and oranges contrast with pale birch and pink tones throughout the interior.
The ground floor includes a lobby, espresso bar and lounge.
We love the large communal table in the lobby area which makes a great place to read the paper, have your espresso before starting your day or strike up a conversation with fellow guests. Photography Credit: Anson Smart
